Clay and
Annie Whitaker Shepherd are largely considered
the first of the Shepherd
clan to leave
the hollows of
Kentucky and begin a new era for the Shepherd Family in
Indiana. Parents,
siblings, and Aunts and Uncles soon followed
Clay's migration north
looking for
jobs that would put food
on the table and land that would provide better
crops than the
hills of Molly's Branch, Rough 'N Tough,
or Mills Branch in Kentucky
did, and in
and around
Liberty Mills, Indiana, is where they settled.
Pictured left

Fannie (between her Dad's legs), Annie,
Leotie (standing),
and Alonzo (behind his parents). Mabry's wife, Viola,
is in the background.
