This newspaper article from North
Manchester's
News Journal archives
clearly demonstrates the
point
that even learned journalists reporting
the news
can
get it wrong, at least in
this case when it comes
to the spelling
of Woodloe's surname, Shepherd
vice the reported version Shepard,
or implying
that
the Olinger's only had
three sons vice the ten
they
actually
had, six from their union and four
brought to the marriage by Chester
Olinger.
And so it has been, ever since
some men could
write and others could
not, documenting history
in one
form or another, and leaving their
accounting and reporting of the details,
no matter how vague or inaccurate they be,
for
researchers, genealogists, and
others to sort
through, correcting what
errors they can concretely
ascertain,
but leaving the vast majority of others
intact because time
and evidence are
no longer on their side.
